Chartered Professional Engineer is the most important quality mark attesting to the current competence of a professional engineer in New Zealand. It is a statutory title under the Chartered Professional Engineers Act of New Zealand 2002, (CPEng Act) which established a register of professional engineers whose competence is up-to-date. Registration is gained by demonstrating competence, which is reassessed for currency at intervals not exceeding five years. Some regulatory authorities specify that certain kinds of work must be carried out or supervised by Chartered Professional Engineers.
The IntPE(NZ) register meets the requirements of two international agreements - the APEC Engineer agreement (13 APEC Economies) and Engineers Mobility Forum agreement (13 countries), and lists professional engineers meeting the IntPE(NZ) competence standard and additional specific qualification and work experience requirements. These are that registrants must hold a Washington Accord accredited qualification; have two years responsible engineering experience and seven years post-graduation professional engineering experience. IntPE(NZ) registrants must undertake on-going assessments at intervals not exceeding 5 years to remain on the register, hence IntPE(NZ) registrants are regarded as being ‘currently competent’.

The object of the Group is the advancement of the fundamental knowledge of the art, science and practice of road traffic and transportation engineering. Membership of the Group is open to engineers, scientists and any other persons professionally engaged in road traffic and transportation engineering in New Zealand. The Institution of Civil Engineers exists to promote and progress civil engineering. ICE a qualifying body, a centre for the exchange of specialist knowledge, and a provider of resources to encourage innovation and excellence in the profession, worldwide. ICE was set up by Royal Charter in 1828 to foster and promote the art and science of civil engineering.
The Engineering Council UK is an organisation set up by Royal Charter to regulate the engineering profession in the UK. Under its Royal Charter, ECUK formally represents the interests of UK engineers abroad. All candidates for registration as Chartered Engineer must satisfy the competence standards set by ECUK and be members of the appropriate Licensed Member engineering Institution. Applicants must show that they have a satisfactory educational base, have undergone approved professional development, and, at interview, must demonstrate their professional competence against specific criteria.
The Institute of Directors in New Zealand promotes excellence in corporate governance, represents directors’ interests and facilitates their professional development through education and training.
